'Evangelists for wildflower meadows, such as Keith Datchler, manager of the Beech Estate near Battle in East Sussex, believe we may in time see even more economic incentives if the carbon that hay meadows soak up in their voluminous roots can be quantified and sold as credits. Meanwhile, the High Weald Landscape Trust, of which Datchler is a trustee, has demonstrated how best to seed a new hay meadow -by cutting an entire hay crop and spreading it on another field within a few hours. Slowly, in places such as Sussex and Cumbria, meadows are being recreated.........'
